Directions

  • 1 In medium bowl, beat butter, sugar, vanilla and egg with electric mixer on medium speed until well blended. Stir in flour and salt until dough forms.
  • 2 Divide dough into 3 parts. Into 1 part of dough, mix chocolate and walnuts. Mix cherries into another part of dough. Into remaining part of dough, mix poppy seed.
  • 3 Line 9x5-inch loaf pan with plastic wrap, leaving 1 inch of plastic wrap overhanging at 2 opposite sides of pan. Spread poppy seed dough evenly in bottom of pan. Spread chocolate-walnut dough over poppy seed dough. Spread cherry dough over chocolate-walnut dough. Cover; refrigerate at least 2 hours until chilled.
  • 4 Heat oven to 375°F. Using plastic wrap, lift dough from pan. Cut dough lengthwise in half. Cut crosswise into 1/4-inch-thick slices. On ungreased cookie sheets, place slices 1 inch apart.
  • 5 Bake about 10 minutes or until light brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheets to cooling racks.

I used melted chocolate for the center layer instead of unsweetened baking chocolate and almond slivers instead of walnuts. They turned out great and I like the unique shape and color in my cookie trays. Very easy recipe to make a double batch of. I used a square pan instead and cut in four columns then sliced off the cookies. They were a good portion and freezing definitely makes the cutting easy.

I decided to try these to add some color to my christmas cookies. I was kind of disappointed in the flavor or lack there of flavor. When baking these cookies I used semi sweet chocolate. I may try them again with milk chocolate. Great Color. Easy to Make. Needs more flavor.

After spending ALL the time making these cookies I was very excited to taste them. I took a bite which contained each layer in it. I was very disapointed. They aren't sweet- they are bitter. Then I took a bite of each individual layer and realized it was the chocolate layer that was making the cookie taste so bitter. I don't know why the recipe calls for unsweetened baking chocolate because that it where the bitterness is coming from. These cookies are very cute so I am going to try them again using milk chocolate chips for the chocolate layer and see how they turn out.
