It Started in Italy

Armed with bright eyes and lots of determination, one proud immigrant began the long journey to America's shores. Thousands of miles and nearly 100 years later, Vincent Taormina's legacy has given rise to America's first premium ready-to-eat soup. Explore the history of an Italian-influenced soup and the generations of people who made Progresso what it is today.

Devotion to Quality for Nearly a Century
Among the many immigrants who left Europe in the early 20th century to find opportunity in a new land was a young Sicilian, Vincent Taormina. He chose New Orleans as his home and began a small importing business, bringing the foods of Italy to the U.S. His first products reached America in 1905.
By 1925, the business had grown, and Taormina merged his fortunes with his cousin Guiseppe Uddo, another immigrant importer, to form the Uddo & Taormina Corporate of New Orleans. By this time, Vincent's son had grown to adulthood and, encouraged by his father, Vincent Taormina Jr. left New Orleans to establish an importing business in New York City.

In 1927, the New York Taormina business merged with the Uddo & Taormina Corporation of New Orleans to form the Progresso® Italian Food Corporation of New York City, and the Progresso label was born.

Driven by the wartime shortage of imported products, the two families opened their original manufacturing plant in Vineland, New Jersey, in 1942. Here the first Progresso premium soup was introduced in 1949, a Minestrone based on an old family recipe. It was also the first canned, ready-to-serve soup in America.

Since then, Progresso has continued its long tradition of creating fine Italian and Italian-influenced foods. Now, because of Vincent Taormina's American dream, people across the country are able to enjoy high-quality Progresso soups, sauces, beans, bread crumbs, tomato products, olive oils and vinegars.
