Bowl Appétit!® FAQ's

Q. Why is my sauce dry?
A. You can make your sauce more "saucy" by adding a few teaspoons of hot water right at the end of the cooking time. But the sauce can turn out dry for a number of reasons:

  • Did you add enough water? Fill the bowl with water to the fill line, which is right below the ledge that sticks out into the bowl. Use a measuring cup instead of filling the bowl right from the tap. Be sure to set the bowl on a flat surface when you're filling it.
  • Did it cook too long? Because every microwave is slightly different, check the product at the end of the minimum cooking time. If it's not done, cook some more, then recheck.
  • Did you let it stand too long? The longer the product stands, the more liquid it absorbs.

Q. Why is my sauce runny?
A. You may have added too much water. Fill the bowl with water to the fill line, which is right below the ledge that sticks out into the bowl. Use a measuring cup instead of filling the bowl right from the tap. Be sure to set the bowl on a flat surface when you're filling it. Or you may not have cooked it long enough. Be sure to cook the product for at least the minimum amount of time given in the package instructions. And finally, it may not have stood long enough. It should stand uncovered at least 2 minutes after you take it out of the microwave. Not only does it cool a bit, but the rice/pasta continues to cook as well as absorb liquid during this time.

Q. Why is my pasta/rice too firm?

Use a measuring cup instead of filling the bowl right from the tap. Be sure to set the bowl on a flat surface when you're filling it. Or you may not have cooked it long enough. Use a measuring cup instead of filling the bowl right from the tap. Be sure to set the bowl on a flat surface when you're filling it. Or you may have cooked it too long. Because every microwave is slightly different, check the product at the end of the minimum cooking time. If it's not done, cook some more, then recheck.

Q. Why did my pasta/rice boil over in the microwave?
A. The main reason the pasta/rice boils over is too much water. Fill the bowl with water to the fill line, which is right below the ledge that sticks out into the bowl. Use a measuring cup instead of filling the bowl right from the tap. Be sure to set the bowl on a flat surface when you're filling it.

Q. Why is the sauce mix lumpy?
A. The sauce mix for some of the flavors will stay a little lumpy after you've stirred it, but most of these lumps will dissolve as it cooks. Use warm water when mixing to make the sauce mix more smooth.
