Surprise Party for All Ages

Surprise Birthday Cupcake Cones

Few people, no matter the age, dislike the excitement and fun of a surprise party. What a way to stay young! The party’s picnic fare uses dressed-up deli foods. Surprise Cupcake Cones are a nod to carefree days of indulging in cake and ice cream, without a worry in the world.

Tips from the Experts

Jennifer

"If your party has a 'guest of honor,' create a tabletop display photographs of the person throughout their life. Ask the person's family or friends for snapshots; print in a variety of sizes."

Party Invitations

  • For kids parties, when you want to really keep the party a secret, you may want to send the invite to the parents only.
  • "Shh, don't tell - it's a surprise!" are good words to put on the front of the invitation. A surprise invitation may require more than the usual when and where details such as special arrangements.

Party Decorations

  • Read our Party Games & Activities section for ideas on the invitees doing the decorating.

Party Games & Activities

  • Arrange to pick up all the party kids in the birthday mobile (decorated of course) and take them to a location like a park, swimming pool, hotel with a pool. Turn them loose decorating with crepe paper streamers and balloons getting ready for the birthday child.
  • A second adult stays behind with the birthday child for just enough time to get things organized. The birthday child is then brought to the party site where everyone can shout "Surprise!"
  • If you want to have the party in your home, arrange to have the party child leave. That way all the partygoers can arrive and the party room decorated before the birthday child returns to be surprised.
  • Arrange surprises during the party like an appearance of a storyteller dressed in costume, a sports hero, or even a pony.

Party Favors

  • Wrap up trinkets in long crepe paper streamers forming a ball about two to three inches in diameter. Tape it to secure it. The kids can unwrap and be surprised at what's inside

Food Fun

  • Continue the surprise theme by hiding an unwrapped piece of chocolate or a marshmallow inside a ball of ice cream. Make ahead and store in the freezer until serving time.

The Day Before

  • Bake the cupcakes; cool and store in resealable plastic bags or covered cake pan.
  • Chill ingredients for Italian Sodas

The Day Of

  • Make Poppy Seed Fruit Salad
  • Assemble the cupcake cones; frost and decorate.
  • Assemble Milano Ciabatta Sandwich.
  • Make Pesto Potato Salad.
