  Crab, How to Remove Meat

Where does one begin? Step-by-step directions for removing crabmeat from a whole crab.

  1. Place crab on its back. Using them, pry up the tail flap, twist off and discard.  Turn right side up; pry up top shell. Pull it away from the body and discard.
  2. Using a small knife (or fingers), cut the gray-white gills from both sides of the crab. Discard gills and internal organs.
  3. To remove meat, twist off claws and legs; use a nutcracker to crack shells at the joints. Remove meat with a small cocktail fork or nutpick.  Bread the body; remove any remaining meat.
