Kumquats
Kumquats, native to China, resemble tiny oranges and are about the size of the end of a thumb. They are thin-skinned, oval or round in shape and golden yellow to orange in color. Entirely edible, their flavor is sweet-tart. Fresh kumquats are available November to March, and they're often sold pickled or preserved.
How to Use
Insert toothpicks and place on a fruit platter for a tangy burst of flavor. Use whole or sliced for a garnish. Garnish crown roast of pork by cutting a thin slice from one end of kumquats and pushing cut ends over protruding bones. Cut into slices and add to tossed salads, orange sauces and glazes for meats or desserts.
How to Buy
Look for firm, unblemished fruit with good color.
How to Store Refrigerate unwashed fruit in a plastic bag up to 1 week.
