Share a weekend brunch with family and friends, and get everyone into the fun by making a cook-your-own pancake bar. With the helpful food chart below, you can host a group as large as 40 and have fun, too!

Make It Special!

Gathering the Guests

  • Design invitations in the shape of pancakes and a bottle of syrup.  Personalize each invitation with “Please Join Our Brunch Bunch.”  On the back, give details for time and place.  If your guests will cook their own pancakes, let them know that, too.

Setting the Stage

  • Set up a safe area for an electric griddle or two.  If necessary, borrow one from a friend.  Have several pancake turners and 1/4-cup spring-handled scoops on hand for scooping batter onto the hot griddle.  You can also use a 1/4-cup measuring cup or ladle to pour batter onto the griddle.
  • At the griddle table or counter, have two bowls of pancake batter available for the cooks.  Also have some fun foods handy that can be sprinkled onto pancakes before being flipped, such as fresh blueberries and raspberries, chocolate chips, nuts and coconut.
  • If you plan to have more than ten guests, avoid “griddle-lock” by setting up two tables or work stations for cooking pancakes.
  • Place butter, toppings and syrups on each table, or if using one large table, put them on each end of the table.
  • Arrange another serving area for beverages (juices, milk, coffee and tea).
  • If you plan to cook all the pancakes yourself and want to keep them warm, place them on an ovenproof plate and cover loosely with aluminum foil.  Keep warm in a 200° oven up to 1 hour.
  • Use this handy chart to figure out how much food to make.

Just for Kids

  • Let kids get creative with their pancake creations while you keep an eye out for their safety.  Place pancake batter in plastic squeeze bottles.  Let kids squeeze out letters or numbers onto the hot griddle.  Then scoop out the normal amount of batter, pour it over each letter and cook as usual.  Remind kids to make their letters backwards so they won’t look like mirror images!
  • Make Silver Dollar Pancakes by using just a tablespoonful of batter for each.
  • Let the kids express their creativity!  Encourage them to try their hand at making shapes such as turtles, teddy bears, bunnies, race cars or happy faces by pouring the batter into those shapes.
  • Have peanut butter and jelly available as toppings for picky pancake eaters!
