Splashin' Fun Birthday Party

Sailboat Birthday Cake

It's a splash! Food and fun to keep the troops cool for a summer birthday or a 'thank-goodness-it's-summer' kids' party! This is a great outdoor party for kids of any age! A water-themed celebration is a natural for hot summer days and is sure to be a hit with party guests. Carefree food and activities make the party easy to prepare and an ocean of fun!

Tips from the Experts

Betty Crocker Cook - Andi Bidwell

"Consider cleaning out the garage as a back-up space or designate an indoor space, like the basement or a playroom, where kids can entertain themselves."

Andi, Food Editor - Betty Crocker Kitchens

Make a Splash with Invitations

  • Make starfish invitations by cutting construction paper into star shapes. On the back, write the date, time and place of the party, plus the suggestion to wear a swimsuit and bring sunscreen and a beach towel. Decorate the front by sprinkling colored sand (available at craft stores) over glue; let dry.

Offer Fun Food in a Sand Pail

  • Serve the sandwiches (wrapped in waxed paper), carrots and celery (wrapped) and Bugles® snacks (in snack-size resealable plastic food-storage bags) along with paper plates, napkins and plastic forks in inexpensive plastic sand pails.

  • Here are two more seaworthy party sandwiches.  Our inventive Sea Monster Sandwich is sure to create a splash, if served, and Grilled Barbecue Subs come with a picnic tip!

Celebrate with Wet and Dry Activities

  • After the party goers are done eating, use the pails for a fun project. Have the kids decorate their pails with beach-related stickers or craft paints in squeeze bottles. The pails can be filled with party favors for guests to take home.

  • Or Go Fish by building fun craft project aquariums with Cheerios® cereal, shells and candy fish as favors! Craft Silly Starfish another time.

  • Set up a child's wading pool, sprinkler and/or other water-related activities. Be sure to have adult supervision.

The Day Before

  • Make and decorate Sailboat Cake.
  • Make Snack Attack; store as directed.

The Morning Of

  • Assemble ingredients and make ahead what you can for selected sandwiches. Or make sandwiches easy with ‘Sand-Fishes!’ Cut bread slices with fish-shaped cookie cutter, fill with peanut butter and wrap in waxed paper.
  • Fill pool with water; assemble other water toys.

Just Before Serving

  • Finish sandwich preparation.
  • Prepare Orange Frost drinks or Frozen Yogurt Floats.
