Red, White and Blue Trifle

Looking for a festive dessert to feed a crowd? This trifle looks stunning and tastes just as good!

The 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays. It’s right up there with Thanksgiving and Christmas. There is just something about the warm weather, family picnics, fireworks and the sound of patriotic music in the background that really gets to me. 

 A holiday isn’t a holiday without a get-together with family and friends. I love planning food around a red, white and blue theme, just to make things a little more festive. This trifle is a fun – and delicious! – way to feed a crowd. And starting with a Betty Crocker cake mix makes it even easier! 

You’ll start by mixing up the cake ingredients.

You’ll then take the cake mix and divide it into 2 bowls. Make these as even as possible.

In one bowl, add the red food coloring. Mix completely. Then repeat with the blue food coloring in the second bowl.

Pour the red cake batter into one 8x8-inch greased baking dish.

Pour the blue batter into a second baking dish. Bake the cakes until done, and set aside to cool.

When you are ready to assemble the trifle, prepare the filling. You’ll start by creaming together the cream cheese, some sugar, and vanilla.

In a second bowl, whip the cream with some more sugar.

Then you will mix the cream cheese mixture and cream together. Start with just 1/2 cup of the cream to lighten the mix, then fold in an additional 1 1/2 cups of the cream. Reserve the remaining cream for the top of the trifle.

Once your cake has cooled completely, cut the red cake into 1-inch squares.

And do the same with the blue cake.

Then you will start assembling the trifle. Take 1/2 of the blue cubes and place them in the bottom of your trifle bowl. Top with 1/3 of the filling. Repeat the layers, adding half of the red cake, 1/3 of the filling, the second half of the blue cake, and top with the remaining filling. (You’ll have half of the red cake left – reserve it for another use.) Top with the cream that you set aside.

Top the trifle with sliced strawberries and blueberries, and serve!
