How to Stock a Drinks Bar
You don’t need one of everything to have a well-stocked bar. Start with a few wines and liquors that you and your friends really like, then build from there. Buy small bottles of before-and after-dinner drinks because smaller amounts of these are usually used. Have a supply of nonalcoholic beverages on hand, too.
• Water and Sodas The most basic bar can be just an assortment of plain and flavored sparkling water and diet and regular sodas
• Beer regular and light
• Wine and Champagne red and white wine and champagne (dry and sweet styles)
• Liquor bourbon, gin, rum, Scotch, tequila, vermouth (sweet and dry), vodka, whiskey
• Mixers bloody Mary mix (or tomato juice), club soda, fruit juice (cranberry, grapefruit, orange), ginger ale, grenadine, margarita mix, soda (regular and diet colas and lemon-lime), sweetened lime juice, tonic water (regular and diet)
• Before-and-After Dinner Drinks brandy, liqueurs (chocolate, coffee, crème de menthe, Irish cream, orange, raspberry)
• Garnishes celery stalks (with leaves), fresh fruit, lemons and limes, maraschino cherries, mint leaves, olives, pickle spears, salt, sugar (regular and colored). For hot sweetened drinks, try cocoa, cinnamon sticks, chocolate (chopped, curls, grated, mini chips), chocolate-covered coffee beans, candy sprinkles, ice-cream toppings, ground spices (apple pie spice, cinnamon nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice), toasted coconut and whipped cream
• Gizmos and Gadgets blender, bottle opener, coasters, cocktail napkins, corkscrew, ice, ice bucket, ice tongs, pitcher, shaker cocktail strainer (wire strainer), jigger (shot glass), muddler (for crushing mint in Mojitos, for example), stirring sticks, straws
