History says that Gooey Butter Cake was invented in St. Louis in the 1930s. Legend has it that it came to be when a baker accidentally reversed the proportions of the sugar and butter in a recipe. The “mistake” was a huge hit with the baker’s customers and soon the sticky, sweet cake became a regional favorite.

A great twist on Gooey Butter Cake is making it into cookies. Great for bake sales, coffee with friends or for filling your cookie jar. They couldn’t be easier! First, mix together Betty Crocker SuperMoist yellow cake mix with cream cheese, butter, one egg and vanilla extract. Then, roll into 1-inch balls and roll in powdered sugar. Bake for 11-15 minutes, cool and you’re done!

Another awesome thing about this easy recipe is that the flavors can be changed up simply by picking a different variety of cake mix. What about trying chocolate mix for Gooey Chocolate Butter Cookies? From red velvet to carrot to lemon, the flavor options using the different varieties of SuperMoist cake mix are as varied and they are delicious!
