I made this recipe a little bit differently. I didn't feel right about the shortening so I omitted it and substituted with a 1/2 cup butter. The recipe turned out perfectly this way. After reading the other review I'm glad I didn't go with the shortening. Because it was such a small amount the cupcakes didn't even go yellow either :)

I made these following the directions. I tried it because all betty crocker recipes thus far are amazing. This is a very bland cupcake, and very crumbly and not in the good way. I truly believe that butter was somehow accidentally omitted. I have not tried it yet adding butter but I will be trying that to see if it makes a difference. I have never seen a cupcake recipe that does not have butter, salted or unsalted. Otherwise, what's the shortening creamed with? This recipe is definitely lacking in flavor, even for a white cake mix. This could be a 5 spoon rating if butter is all that is missing.
