This is vegetarian but can easily be made vegan with vegan cheese. That's my plan! And I'm going to use napa cabbage since that's what I have. This looks awesome. My mom used to make something like this with meat in it called "pigs in a blanket."

I'm with you Jamie...someone with the screen name "Vegan" you think they'd know the difference between vegetarian (no animal meat, but can use/consume animal products-milk, cheese made with milk, you get the idea). Vegan is strictly no animal meat or products. So this IS a vegetarian dish. That being said, I thought this dish was very good. I took the advice to add some black beans and it was really good. Instead of using chili sauce I made my own sauce based on Ina Garten's recipe for stuffed cabbage...making a few changes. Would be a good recipe to change up and experient with.

Actually, Jamie is right. These are vegetarian, delicious, and easy. I did add a small amount of black beans just for more texture. We will definately have them again.

actually.. vegetarian foods can contain animal products such as milk and cheese.. they just cannot contain the meat of the animal.. vegan foods cannot contain either.. get your facts right if your gonna complain =)

while this is a great receipe its NOT vegetarian or vegan!!! Subsitute the CHEESE for vegetarian cheese there are several flavors even pepperjack. Use pure vegetable oil - soybean oil - peanut oil - almond oil - grapeseed oil is my fav. Brown rice is better than White (processed) rice. Better nutrition/fibre. Onions vary in type/flavor - i would use white. on the Wine, it would be best to use a vegetarian broth you have made. I make my own from the vegetable juices i make with juicer. I don't use cooking sprays (need to read all ingredients in sprays)same with processed chili sauce - need to read the labels for high sugar/salt content and other ingredients that are perservatives. Not hard to make your own. Throw ingredients into food processor and wala done in few min. Much better than processed. I don't cook with salt unless sea-salt. most foods have their own. Remember its NOT vegetarian if you use Animal products in it!!! I would stuff cabbage rolls with vegetables carrots (shredded) some cabbage leaves - oriental veggies - your choice.
