EXPERT TIPS

Expert Tips

For a fun family presentation, substitute another pasta of the same size for the wagon wheels. Try shells, rotini or spirals.

Ground beef can be used instead of the ground turkey. If you don't use a very lean beef, omit the oil.

Use an heirloom variety of tomato or other variety to give this skillet dinner a little different look. Try an orange, yellow, green or purple tomato instead of traditional red.

This is an awesome alternative to Hamburger Helper, that is loaded with unneeded salt. My family prefers spicy food so I added some Cayenne pepper. I also omitted the celery and added green beans (I know the green beans sound odd, but this is a healthier version of goulash… and growing up we always put green beans in our goulash.) Fast and easy meal!

This is one of my favorites. Really great recipe, very very good. The only thing I changed was the wagon wheel pasta, I ended up using fusilli instead because they didn't have the wagon wheel pasta at my local grocery store. I will definitely be making this again.

I don't really know how this recipe has an average 3.5/5 spoons. I thought it was pretty terrible. I followed the recipe with a few changes, but I think as written this recipe would not only be bland, but pretty inedible. I subbed the turkey for lean ground beef and omitted the oil. I added around 1.5 cups of pasta to make it go a bit further. I did everything else according to plan. I tasted the finished version before serving and it was so awful. There was no flavor, it just tasted tomato-y. To save it as much as I could from the trashcan, I added some garlic powder, paprika and a crushed beef bouillon cube. I also added a splash of Worcestershire sauce. If you don't have kids that mind a bit of spice, a tiny amount of cayenne OR red pepper flakes might also work. I also added corn for a bit of crunch. It ended up being salvageable, but just barely. It tasted pretty much like Goulash. Fortunately my less picky husband is finishing off the leftovers. But the rest of the family didn't like it so I won't be making it again.
