For easiest cutting, cut the bars while they're still warm.

Three bars (1.55 ounces each) milk chocolate, broken into small pieces, can be substituted for the milk chocolate chips.

Excellent! I've been baking these since I was a kid, for probably 35 years, and our Betty Crocker cookbook is worn out! A family favorite for sure. I like to roll/pat them out on a flat cookie sheet about a 1/4 thick, because when you get a little crisper cookie along the outside edges, they really resemble toffee. (Your rectangle will not be perfect.) I use 3-4 hershey bars broken into squares, they melt beautifully. Then you can score the cookies with a knife while chocolate is still melted, or just allow them to set up, it takes a few hours for chocolate to firm up again. (I would not recommend putting them in fridge to firm up.) I just break them up into more rustic pieces. Best eaten same day.

These bars are so easy to make, the first time I made them I had trouble melting the chocolate so instead I used Nutella and then sprinkled with 2 chopped up heath bars and some walnuts. my family adores them and I enjoy making them :)

I have my mom's Betty Crocker that I grew up learning from. It is missing the entire cover, the index passed C and it is torn in half and missing a small chunk around the tear from. 385 to 415. I checked and it is from 1965! Anyway this recipe is in there and was our must have holiday cookie recipe my entire. Childhood. I searched for it because I have the pieces of the Betty Crocker now and my mom asked me to email it so I just thought I'd see and here it is! The only difference is that mine uses a GREASED pan and calls for a 3.5 ounce chocolate bar. I remember being allowed to put the squares of chocolate on the hot bar as a little girl. Anyway this very long post is my way of saying that I love this recipe, it is tried and true and it also hold warm memories of being in the kitchen with my mom. Love you Betty Crocker company!
