EXPERT TIPS

Expert Tips

A strata is a casserole that’s made by layering bread cubes and cheese, then pouring an egg mixture over the layers.

We’ve used rye bread, but you can use any bread you’d like—just add 1/4 teaspoon dried dill weed and 1/4 teaspoon caraway seed to keep the rye flavor.

Skip cooking the fresh onions in oil and use 1 tablespoon instant dried onion instead. Use reduced-fat cheese, white chicken meat only, no-fat milk and no-fat egg substitute.

Cater to individual tastes by varying the bread, cheese and meat in this easy strata.

Very yummy! I added Corned Beef which means I needed more eggs. Served w/ horseradish sauce & mustard. BIG HIT!

I thought the recipe sounded yummy so I made it for my husband and I for breakfast. I was disappointed by both the appearance and taste. I used pumpernickel rye and maybe it would have been better with lighter rye bread.
