cups Rice Chex® cereal

cups Wheat Chex® cereal

cups bite-size cheese crackers
1
cup bite-size pretzel twists
6
tablespoons butter or margarine
3
tablespoons steak sauce
1
tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1
teaspoon ground red pepper (cayenne)
1
cup French-fried onions
1
cup salted peanuts
1
tablespoon onion powder
2
teaspoons garlic powder

  • 1 In large microwavable bowl, mix cereals, crackers and pretzels.
  • 2 In 2-cup microwavable measuring cup, microwave butter on high about 40 seconds or until melted. Stir in steak sauce, Worcestershire sauce and pepper. Pour over cereal mixture; stir until evenly coated.
  • 3 Microwave uncovered on High 4 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir in onions and peanuts. Sprinkle with onion and garlic powders; toss until evenly coated. Spread on waxed paper or foil to cool. Store in airtight container.

I heeded the advice of HBcook: put all the spices in the butter, put all except onion in the mix, and used the oven baking method. I also reduced the cayenne to 1\4 teaspoon and used Hot and Spicy cheese crackers. The heat was a good level for us, not overwhelming. It disappeared quickly at our house.

This has a real kick to it. I used A1 Steak Sauce and reduced fat Cheese-Its. Next time I would not do the MW as the chex got soggy. I would do the oven @250º for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. I would also add the spices to the melted butter and add all dry ingredients except the onions before baking.
