Pretty hard candies peek out from the "windows" of special, shaped sugar cookies.

I'd really like to know a name brand for what "hard candies" work best for this recipe. I see LifeSavers mentioned but wonder what other types of candies have been used successfully. Thanks. erin

You can tell by the recipe that this cookie is made to be harder, I suspect so that it can hold up to hanging on the tree. They're meant to be more pretty than tasty.

So I agree with mamachic the cookies seemed very dry. I made this recipe a few years ago. To correct this problem I used my regular sugar cookie recipe and used lifesavers as they were easier to crunch :) and definitely need to be a fine powder. Then they were delicious, but to be worthwhile they need a better cookie recipe

Too much work for too little satisfaction. My kids enjoyed helping with these for a little bit, but they got tired of it and ran off to play after a while. They usually love to help me bake. When I mixed the dough, the dough was crumbly and too dry. It was very time consuming to make these. The candies should not be "coarsely" crushed, but should be finely crushed to ensure that they melt all the way. And then when the cookies are done baking, they are hard. I like soft sugar cookies. The flavor of the sugar cookie was decent, but I won't make them again, as they are too much work for such a mediocre result.
