Directions

  • 1 Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Grease or spray bottom and sides of 13x9-inch pan. Make and bake cake as directed on box for 13x9-inch pan. Cool 10 minutes; remove cake from pan to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 1 hour. Refrigerate or freeze cake 1 hour until firm.
  • 2 Using serrated knife, cut rounded dome from top of cake to make flat surface; place cake cut side down. Cut cake as shown in diagram.
  • 3 On tray, place cake piece 1. Arrange pieces 2, 3 and 4 as shown in diagram, trimming to fit, standing up piece 3 for top fin. Trim point of piece 2 for nose of shuttle. Attach each piece with a small amount of frosting.
  • 4 Frost cake with a thin layer of frosting to seal in crumbs. Freeze 30 to 45 minutes to set frosting. Add final coat of frosting to cake, using up remaining frosting.
  • 5 Use licorice to make diagonal lines across nose of shuttle and to outline top fin. Use baking bits to outline tip, wings and back of shuttle. Add large and small stars to wings and back; add round candies to both sides of fin. Write "USA" or another message on top of fin with decorating gel. Insert candles at end of shuttle. If desired, just before serving, light candles for "liftoff." Store loosely covered.

Create an attractive display by covering a piece of sturdy cardboard with colored foil-coated space-themed wrapping paper, then plastic food wrap. Stretch and secure with tape. Or cover cardboard with foil or cooking parchment paper.

Place strips of waxed paper under corners of unfrosted cake pieces. After frosting, just remove waxed paper strips. No cleanup needed!

I made this cake for my son's 9th birthday. He and his friends loved it!!! It was pretty easy to make. I used a little more icing then it called for. It took one and a half containers to do the crumb coat. Loved all the tips like freezing the cake with crumb coat then doing final icing. Rinsing the icing spatula really helped give the cake a smooth finished look. I decorated it a little different than the recipe also. My son and I had a blast being creative. I'm looking for a reason to make this cake again :)

My family and I had major challenges in making this cake. We ended up making three cakes, but two actual "shuttles". The first cake fell apart so we have it now as our "shortcake" samples :-) The other two looked more like a Klingon Bird of Prey (aka warship) more than the Space Shuttles. It is incredibly difficult to frost the cut edge without getting the cake bits all over the frosting, and we did freeze the cake before cutting and frosting. Following the video made it look easy, but I highly recommend practicing a lot before committing to any "public" event if you plan to provide a cake for a group gathering. The construction simply was not as easy as the video portrayed. Plus, the ingredients were not all available, like string licorice so we improvised. We still enjoyed the cake though. P.S. We do not live in a high altitude location and worked in an air conditioned kitchen, so we did try to control the temperature to avoid melting and softening of the cake + frosting.

I made this for my sons 8th b-day and it was a big surprice. For me too, because it was my first themed cake I have ever made and it was not so difficult than it looks. Thank you for this great idea
