A few ingredients are all that it takes to look forward to tender green beans and smoked ham in a southern-style side dish.
pound boneless smoked ham or pork chops, cubed
pounds fresh green beans, cut into 1- to 2-inch pieces
medium onion, cut into eighths
Mix all ingredients in 3 1/2- to 4-quart slow cooker.
Cover and cook on low heat setting 6 to 8 hours or until beans are tender.
Southern "string" beans are traditionally simmered in a ham broth made with a ham bone or ham hock until tender and very flavorful. They're considered a real treat in the South. This recipe uses smoked ham or pork chops because they're easier to find.
Serve this summertime southern side dish with fried chicken, fresh lemonade and coconut layer cake. It's like having a picnic at your dining room table.
