Slow Cooker Maple-Sauced Pears

cup packed brown sugar
1/3
cup maple-flavored syrup

tablespoon butter or margarine, melted

teaspoon orange peel
1/8
teaspoon ground ginger
1
tablespoon cornstarch
2
tablespoons orange juice

  • 1 Peel pears. Core pears from bottom, leaving stems attached. Place pears upright in 3 1/2- to 5-quart slow cooker.
  • 2 Mix remaining ingredients except cornstarch and orange juice; pour over pears.
  • 3 Cover and cook on high heat setting 2 to 2 1/2 hours or until tender.
  • 4 Remove pears from cooker; place upright in serving dish or individual dessert dishes.
  • 5 Mix cornstarch and orange juice; stir into sauce in cooker. Cover and cook on high heat setting about 10 minutes or until sauce is thickened. Spoon sauce over pears.

    Note: This recipe was tested in slow cookers with heating elements in the side and bottom of the cooker, not in cookers that stand only on a heated base. For slow cookers with just a heated base, follow the manufacturer’s directions for layering ingredients and choosing a temperature.

Serve an elegant dessert! Place each pear upright on a pretty dessert plate. Spoon the sauce around the pears, and sprinkle with chopped toasted nuts or coconut. Spoon a big dollop of soft whipped cream alongside the pears, and garnish the plate with a twisted orange slice.

For a honey of a pear, use 1/4 cup honey instead of the maple syrup for a sweet change of pace.

This is the best 'easy' recipe ever! My husband routinely rates different recipes I try. He NEVER gives a #10, but this time he did. This is so pretty when served with the pear standing up with the carmely sauce in a pool and sprinkled with toasted walnuts. I put the orange peel and the whipped cream just as in the picture. I recommend using green pears, otherwise the ripe ones would turn to mush. That is from years of experience. I will serve this at our next formal dinner party, which we host often. Trust me newbies, its great. Oh, and I used a 'heat on bottom only' crockpot. Worked fabulously. Two hours is all it takes to cook.

This is amazing!!! My family LOVES it! It's very elegant and extreemly simple. My tip: try to baste them several times with the juice to keep them moist (they come out fine either way though).
