Awful. I don't like to waste food. Whenever I make a meal that's just ok I take the hit and eat the leftover. I couldnt even get through more than 2 spoonfuls of this soup. It literally made me gag.

This without doubt is the most unfavorful soup I have ever made. I tried salt and pepper and a spice blend and it did not help. I tried mixing in a teaspoon of dijon mustard in a soup bowl but that did not help. The soup is just bland, no character at all. I tried adding some Franks Hot sauce and that helped a little. Finally I put in a 4 oz. can of mild green chiles (chopped)and that helped a lot but nevertheless I will not be making this soup again. Big disappointment.

This is absolutely delicious. Hearty and filling. The only thing I did differently is add some fresh ground pepper. For those having trouble finding wheat berries, I found them at the local health food store, also called Whole Grain Wheat her was $3.97 for a 1 lb bag. It is much like a small barley when cooked so I think that you could substitute pearl barley if you cannot find the wheat berries.

I want to make this, but I can't find wheat berries...closest thing I found was wheat germ...has anyone tried it without wheat berries?

This recipe is much too big for a 3-4 qt. slow cooker, needs a 5-6 qt cooker. I had to leave the water out, and was able to put in only 32 oz of beef broth. I love blackeyed peas but I wouldn't make this dish again. Too expensive (wheat berries cost almost $5), and was OK but just didn't taste that good.

Sounds delicious, can't wait to try, but one question...could I use kale instead of spinach?

I LOVE slow cooker recipes and I have made the BEST dried beans in the slow cooker. I substituted hotdog type turkey sausage for the kielbasa sausage (which has MSG!), was glad I finally found the wheatberries which added significantly to heartiness and flavor, and added more spinach. Cooked for almost 10 hours and was PERFECT. Served 3 for dinner and made 4 nice lunches...HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I have been making this soup for years on Halloween; only we call it "Eye of Newt & Swamp Rat" Soup. Ha Ha. My kids ask for it every year it is that good! I have also used "Little Smokies" in place of the Turkey Sausage.
