Seasoned Deep-Fried Black-Eyed Peas

Blogger Paula Jones from Bell'alimento puts a new twist on a Southern New Year’s Day tradition. Seasoned Deep-Fried Black-Eyed Peas are super crunchy on the outside, creamy and dreamy on the inside. They make a great appetizer or game-time snack!

cups vegetable or canola oil
cup frozen black-eyed peas, thawed
tablespoon seafood seasoning (from 6-oz container)

  • 1 In deep 2-quart saucepan, heat oil to 325°F. Line plate with layers of paper towels to absorb oil after cooking peas.
  • 2 Carefully place peas in hot oil; cook 3 to 4 minutes.
  • 3 Using wire strainer or skimmer, transfer peas to plate. Immediately sprinkle with seasoning.

Expert Tips

You can use a deep-fat fryer instead of a saucepan.

Use a candy thermometer to be sure your oil is at the correct temperature.

To determine if peas are cooked properly, taste one. It should be crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside.
