This apple pie is a classic, from the scrumptious filling to the flaky pastry crust. It is homemade goodness at its very best.

Yes, milk will not do for the glaze, it has to be egg white; otherwise it makes for a delicious classic. Also five or six apples are aplenty, eight is too many. Since I was out of shortening I have used butter instead. It worked out just fine. Great recipe.

I didn't like how the crust turned out. I followed the recipe exactly and still ended up with dry, cracking dough. I even attempted it a second time and got the same result.

3rd Time following this recipe, everything from scratch.. pie in the oven as I write this review.. & it's heavenly!! Except I would say 4 to 5 medium apples is sufficient. & for that "pretty glaze", just brush egg-white on top. Plus if you do the cross-weave. it looks amazing. Definitely recommend this classic. Love it!!

It's also really yummy if you add some ground cardamom (to your taste) with the spices. I've only had one person guess what it was over the years. Otherwise this is the "classic" apple pie recipe in my mind.

In the expert tips it says to brush with milk or cream to get your pretty glaze... can't help but let you all know this is known as an "egg wash." I've grown up for almost 25 years with my dad as a baker, and not one of your "take it out of the freezer and bake it" bakers but as one of our city's few true bakeries. You will get your "pretty look" prettier by brushing with egg white. The egg wash also works perfectly on gingerbread cut outs at Christmas so that the dark, ginger color looks pretty and shiny if you choose to not decorate!

I really didn't like how the crust turned out i followed the recipe exactly and all it did was fall apart I tried it twice thinking it was probably me the first time but no it did it again the second time so i think you should redo the crust with something other then shortening and use less apples i had maybe two apples left over after filling the pie.

Really loved this recipe however, I felt like I could have used half the amount of apples. Maybe just a preference thing but I cut up 7 and only used 6 and I think I could have really just used 4. It was my first time ever baking a pie and making my own crust and I am a novice baker so it was very doable!
