A bottle of red food color is the secret to classic red velvet cake. Cake mix makes this version foolproof, moist and delicious.

Not very good at all. I have tried every brand out there and this was not even close. No chocolate flavour and a gritty frosting. The best red velvet cake mix is by Duncan Hines. Great chocolate flavour and nice red colour. Sorry Betty Crocker. This cake mix is not your best work.

I made these for a Christmas Eve gathering for family and close friends. A number of teens would be there so I fixed fudge and these cupcakes with them in mind. Within about 15 minutes after they arrived, there was not a cupcake or piece of fudge left. I do agree with others that the cupcakes are great but the icing tastes store bought. I, too, will make my own frosting.

Extremely easy way to make Red Velvet and the texture and flavor of the cupcake is delicious...however the frosting still tastes store bought so next time I'll just make my own frosting. For something quick and easy for a gathering or for the kids to take to school they are perfect.

These cupcakes were very moist. I used a french vanilla cake mix instead, and they tasted great. Very easy & quick to make. They were a great party-pleaser. I also used the Marshmallow Buttercream Frosting on these - it tasted excellent. I am definitely going to make these again!

This recipe is an easy way to make cupcakes that LOOK like red velvet cupcakes. I was reading over the other reviews that say they don't taste like red velvet cupcakes. A true red velvet cupcake is not a chocolate cake with red dye added. The "scratch" recipe has minimal cocoa powder that aides in the red color of the cake but does not add flavor. That being said, this recipe should be used to make holiday cupcakes look pretty without all the hassle involved in baking from scratch. For instance, I made these cupcakes for my daughter's holiday party at school. The children don't know the difference between the real thing and an easy substitute. All they care is that they looked pretty with the green frosting "christmas" trees and tasted good. And I didn't have to work as hard! So that is why I gave this recipe 4 stars. I took away the last star because they shouldn't be called red velvet cupcakes.

This cake came out perfect I did a two layer cake instead of cup cakes(forgot to buy liners), I added cocoa powder to the batter, a 60ml bottle of coloring and adjusted the liquid to suit. I took on the challenge of making my cream cheese frosting, I was a hit not too sweet but sweet enough for the kids. Thanks Betty...........

I made these cupcakes and a cake for my birthday party and they were a hit. Someone also bought some from a bakery who specializes in red velvet cakes and everyone was not satisfied with them. They couldn't believe how moist and good they were. They were such a hit that everyone request me to make them. Love the quick secret recipe.
