medium head red cabbage, coarsely shredded (8 cups)

  1. In 4-quart Dutch oven, melt butter over medium heat. Add apples; cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. Stir in remaining ingredients. Heat to boiling. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 35 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender.

Variation
Jazz up this classic cabbage dish by adding 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of caraway seed, celery seed or fennel seed. For a spicy-sweet note, add 1/4 teaspoon each of ground cinnamon, ground cloves and ground nutmeg.
