I followed the recipe...but yet I was unable to roll or make the candy cane cookies...I ended up making a ball cookie out of the dough and then sprinkling with powdered sugar. I was very disappointed with this! Though the dough is good to eat!

I have been making this recipe for at least 20 years & yes it came from Betty Crocker! Everyone has always loved these. The only change I have ever made is to roll the dough in not just flour, but I also added a little powdered sugar to the board. My kids when they were younger didn't care for the peppermint extract, so I added a little more vanilla. The cookies are just as popular today as they were 20 years ago! My kids still ask me to make them.

I added a few touches to this recipe and it turned out great. I added the peppermint extract but I also added 1/3 cup of softened cream cheese. It made all the difference. My kids couldn't get enough of them.

I thought this cookie looks beautiful when it is made but it was pretty bland. There was not enough sweetness to the cookie and the taste was disappointing. I did not have any problem with stickiness although the colder the dough the better. I chilled it overnight and noticed the dough got sticky only when it starting to become room temp so it is important to keep the dough cold. Next time I would dip the cookie in chocolate as someone suggested to make it more flavor and sweet.

These cookies are really simple and don't take much time. If you add the peppermint they are wonderful. You will need to refrigerate them or you wont be able to get the dough to twist well. Also make sure you use small amounts of dough for each cookie or they will flatten really bad and look like white and red blobs. But definitely worth repeating!

These cookies came out great, looked festive and were a nice addition to my christmas cookie assortment. I brushed them with light corn syrup after they were cool and put colored sugar on top which gave them a nice sparkle. I also made a batch and added peppermint extract to make these taste like real candy canes. The dough is much easier to work with if it is refrigerated for 45 minutes to a hour first. I will make these again for sure.
