This is the first time I have made this recipe . I made it for my mother and she loved it .I used splenda instead of sugar . I looked at many recipes and this one seemed simple with not all the heavy molasses and brown sugar.

The first time I made this was about 25 years ago. Since then I have made it many times as it is a perfect Christmas Gift. So unlike the standard 'store-bought' fruitcakes but much like the gourmet gift shop cakes that you have to pay a fortune for. I try to get the brightest coloured fruit and wrap the cake in cellophane tied with a gold ribbon. The best recipes are so often the oldest recipes.
