Tastes GREAT! The only thing I would have loved to see is a more vibrant red color. Might try two bottles of red food coloring next time and reduce the amount of water used accordingly. Did not attempt the frosting.

Hi, I ocasionally try my hand and baking recipes that I think I can handle so I tried this one. I followed the instructions step by step to the tee and my cake turned out wonderfully!!!! My whole family loved it!!!! I think the frosting was superb. Note to those who said it was runny, I used a hand held mixer on high speed and it turned out just like the directions said! So light and fluffy. MMMMMMMM MMMMMMM GOOD! I topped it with fresh halved strawberries and my God, so delicious. If I can do it, anybody can. Thanks Betty Crocker!!! I will make this routinely for the rest of my life.

This recipe is so DELICIOUS! I actually used this recipe to make cupcakes instead of just a regular cake, it worked out perfect! The frosting may come out thin but all you have to do is add more cream cheese to it and whip it longer. I have got to say this is my favorite frosting. The bits of cream cheese are so delightful! I recommend this recipe 100%. Enjoy!

I made this cake for a family dinner and had great reviews ! There is a few additions that I made to the cake receipe. I added a large size box of Jello chocolate pudding and pie filling- Chocolate. I have always done this, and the cake is never dry. Also DO NOT over mix your cake batter! I used cream cheese frosting mixed with Cool Whip, for a light, yummy frosting. Store cake in the refrigerator.

Was an easy recipe to follow. If you are looking to get a real red looking cake this is not the recipe for you. Since it calls for chocolate cake you obviously cannot dye brown red, so get a white cake or a velvet cake box mix. The whipped frosting was okay. It turned out kind of runny, so it was leaking through the sides of the cake pan. I would suggest finding a different recipe for the top. It still was a good cake.

Overall this was pretty easy to make. I opt for the variation recipe. Although I haven't tried the cake yet, I was very disappointed with the outcome of the icing. Like a previous member mentioned, it came out thin. I have a better recipe for the icing. I tried this recipe w/another red velvet cake. I will be honest, although the cake didn't come out good the frosting was AWESOME! Each year (this will be my 2nd) I try to prefect this dessert. The icing is as follow: 8oz cream cheese, 1/2c margarine, 1teaspoon vanilla, 16oz confectioners sugar. PLEASE DO NOT USE THE ICING RECIPE YOU WILL BE VERY DISAPPOINTED.

Made the recipe (cupcakes instead of cake) on my daughters birthday and everyone loved it. Followed the recipe for the icing and add sugar-free pistachio Jell-O instant pudding and it was good. "LOVE THE RECIPE"

Dissapointment - Dry cake. Icing was light and fluffy though. Overall, this is a POOR imitation for a Red Velvet Cake. The only resemblance is the color.

I made this cake for my Boss's Birthday, and I thought it was one of the best cakes I ever made! My co-workers love all my cakes, but the frosting was excellent with the chocolate cake, not too sweet light and fluffy. I would make this cake again. I only use Betty Crocker products and recipes because I have had wonderful success for over 25 years!! Thank-you and keep new cook books comming.

This cake was a success after, I added two ingredients. I added 3/4 cup of pudding and 3/4 cup of sour cream, and then it wasn't so dry.

I followed this recipe exactly and found myself dissappointed with the outcome...The cake is dry, NOT moist at all. I agree with the person that commented before.

I attempted this recipe with my mouth watering in anticipation to taste it and was very disappointed in the outcome. I followed the recipe exactly. This is what I encountered. The cake texture was not very moist. I did not over cook it and used the exact amount of oil and buttermilk, but it just tasted like another dried out chocolate cake. The icing was another story. I think the recipe may be incorrect. It calls for 1 cup of butter and 1 cup of 10x sugar. Right there I should have known something wasn't going to work out. I double checked the recipe again in case I printed something wrong, but sure enough it was right? That was way too much butter for that amount of 10x sugar? I had to go with store bought by then because I used up all the other 10xsugar I had trying to fix the icing recipe, but it still didn't work? Even after adding the thickened milk/flour mixture, it didn't help? Although the icing was tasty, it was so runny like soup that it went down the drain? It this recipe can be verified by anyone, that would be great for any future bakers. I've made a many cakes and attepmted many different icing variations, but this was just so disappointing, but I'd try it again if someone has a better or updated version!!
