Used zucchini instead of broccoli, added some canned garbanzos and garnished it with a little romano cheese and a drizzle of olive oil. Yummy!

Definitely hearty - a meal in itself. I like this alot. I added some sugar and salt, and omitted the fennel.

We really love this soup. I've made it several times now and last time I crumbled the sausage instead of slicing it, and substituted zucchini for the broccoli. I also prefer the crushed tomatoes. Just delicious!

I have made this soup several times and each time it got great reviews. The first time I made it didn't have whole tomatoes so I used crushed tomatoes. It had a stronger taste but it was still delicious. I have since made it with bratwurst and have used drained and rinsed garbanzo beans. Also, I do not add the pasta to the soup I precook it - the soup doesn't get too thick that way. My family loved it when I made home made spaetzle and added them at the end.

This soup is delicious. I have shared the recipe with the ladies in the office and everyone who has either made or tasted it loves it. I have used the brocolli and another time I used a can of drained and rinsed garbanzo beans. It is definitely a keeper.

This soup is DELICIOUS! It will become a family favorite. A few changes...did add garlic & Italian seasoning at the beginning, used chicken broth instead of the water and diced tomatoes instead of whole ones, held the broccoli out and added at the very end. Also cooked the noodles and put into the bowls, put the soup over them. I cooked it for several hours because I had the time to do so. It's beautiful and delicious. Grated cheese and breadsticks with salad made a wonderful meal! Definite do-again!

This soup was awesome! My husband totally devoured it and asked for it again. Believe me, that is rare for an Army man to do! He said he will never doubt my picks of soup for a nightly dinner again. After 25 years I consider that an acheivement!

I read the reviews before making and put pasta and broccoli in later then all other items. This soup is excellent. I did use regular Italian sausage (both hot and mild) links, used 2 1/2 cups of chicken broth instead of water and used ditalini instead of mostaccioli pasta, and grated parmeasan cheese on top of each bowl. I have an Italian friend who is and excellent cook. She came to dinner and she loved it and wanted the recipe. FINALLY a recipe I can give to her instead of she giving me one of her recipes.

This soups flavour was very good and easy to make. I used hot and mild sausage and it kicked up the spice a bit. Everyone here loved it and it was added to our "make again" list. Thank you.

I had my doubts about this soup when i saw it called for french onion soup, but this is probably one of the best soups we've had in a long time. it seems to end up a bit spicy, which may be due to the sausage as much as anything (i used mild sausage). i also reduced the water by about half, since we like our soups a bit more like stews, and we added grated parmesan at eating time. leftovers got better after a day or two in the fridge.

I make it all the time during the winter months. My Family loves it. The only thing that I do different is that I use Penne Pasta instead of the pasta in the recipe.

We left out the fennel, but added some minced garlic (everything's better with garlic) saute'd with the sausage and some grated parmesean cheese just before serving..Definately add the cooked pasta - al dente so it can soak up a little of the broth..Don't put the brocolli in to soon or it becomes a little mushy...This really is a terrific recipe, very comforting on a cold day

This was a wonderful soup! I will make it again - - the only thing i will do differently is to cook the pasta al dente outside the soup and put it in last. The pasta seemed to suck up alot of the water from the soup so it was a little too thick. Other than that, it was a keeper!

This soup has become such a standard in my friends and family's life that it's one of the most requested items!!! I've served it for "Company's Coming" events, skating parties and just plain dinner and it's a no-fail soup. The flavours are complex, it's a piece of cake to double or triple, and when I serve it to guests, I already have the recipe printed out, to hand to them, because no one wants to leave without it! One of the BEST recipes I've ever tried from this site! Side note: I never leave pasta in soup, I don't like the thickening of it. So, I make the pasta separate, keep it separate, and just add it to the bowls once the soup is done. When I freeze this, I also freeze pre-cooked pasta to go along with it: 5 minutes in the microwave and you have a superb dinner. THANK YOU, BETTY CROCKER!!!
