I used the Butter cream frosting on my ombre cake as well. Boogybaker - I would just go find the Violet Wilton food coloring at Michael's and use that. I used it to get my blues really blue! http://awesomeamy-ablogaboutnothing.blogspot.com/2012/07/fantastic-weekend.html

How do you do the purple? Have had 2 attempts and purple has turned out brown on both despite using minimal amounts of blue

I made this cake yesterday for my Daughters third birthday party today. Her theme for her party was my little pony, and a rainbow cake went along with the theme. Everyone thought it was amazing. It was easier then I thought it was going to be, but time consuming. It is well worth it though. She loved her cake, and so did everyone else.

I love to bake, I made this rainbow cake and was so very proud of what i did. I did exactly what it said. Then disaster hit. the second and 3rd layer came apart AFTER I frosted the cake. What went wrong? I have been so depressed about this. What did I do wrong? Is there a secret that anyone knows about making the cake? If so PLEASE tell me.Thank you all for your help.

This is a fabulous cake! I followed the cake recipe & used pre made white vanilla frosting! It looked & tasted great! I made this recipe for St. Patrick's Day and kept the in between layer frosting white, but colored the outer frosting green. It was absolutely perfect!

I made this for my daughter's 10th birthday to match her Wizard of Oz theme. It turned out great. I separated the batter into 6 clear plastic "gladware" containers (about 2 C size?) so I could divide it as evenly as possible. I also used a Wilton cake leveler to make even layers once the cakes were baked. It definitely saved me time and the layers were pretty much identical in heighth. I stacked up the cake tops that I had removed and had a layer cake without frosting for those (uncommon!) family members who prefer no frosting. I tried to get by with half a frosting recipe but it wasn't quite enough. I'll make the full recipe from the start next time.

Made this cake for my daughter's 22nd birthday. Used neon colors and she loved it! She likes white cake so this helped make it more interesting. It does not fit under a cake cover which makes storage more difficult. It is very time consuming but worth it!

Made this for my son's 5th birthday - was a huge hit! Super moist, awesome icing. Cut slices in half (girls wanted top colours, boys bottom) as pieces are huge. Doesn't fit in my Tupperware cake carrier. Will make again!
