Pizza Joe Sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped (1 cup)
  • 1 small green bell pepper, chopped (1/2 cup)
  • 2 jars (14 ounces each) pizza sauce
  • 1 package (3 1/2 ounces) sliced pepperoni, chopped (3/4 cup)
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
  • 18 sandwich buns, split
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (8 ounces)

    Cook beef and onion in 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat about 8 minutes, stirring frequently, until beef is brown; drain.

    Spray 3 1/2- to 4-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. Spoon beef mixture into cooker. Stir in bell pepper, pizza sauce, pepperoni, basil and oregano.

    Cover and cook on low heat setting 4 to 6 hours.

    Serve beef mixture with buns and cheese. Beef mixture will hold on low heat setting up to 4 hours.

  • Just as for pizza, the meat in these sandwiches can be interchanged according to your family's personal preferences. Use all bulk Italian sausage (be sure to cook until no longer pink), or use half ground beef and half Italian sausage.
  • To make this kid-friendly recipe all the more appealing, serve with a take-along treat such as pudding snacks or chewy fruit snack rolls.
