Pear Applesauce

Fresh, juicy pears add a delectable new flavor note to applesauce, and this rich and fruity recipe is a cinch to whip up.

ripe Anjou pears, peeled, diced
sweet cooking apples, peeled, diced
tablespoons fresh lemon juice (1 medium)
tablespoon honey
cup water

  • 1 In 3-quart saucepan, mix pears, apples, lemon juice and honey until well combined. Stir in water.
  • 2 Cover; heat to boiling over medium heat. Reduce heat to medium-low; cook, stirring occasionally, 20 minutes.
  • 3 Uncover; mash pears and apples with potato masher; stir well. Continue cooking, uncovered, about 10 minutes longer or until most of water has evaporated. Cool slightly before serving. Store in airtight container in refrigerator.

Expert Tips

Too determine if an Anjou pear is ripe, press gently at the top of the pear near the stem. If it yields and springs back, it’s ready to eat.

Cut the apples last so that they have the least chance of browning.
