We have been cooking our chicken this way for a long time. We can cook 5 chickens (for a crowd) at a time on our gas grill. My husband made the grate that holds the 5 cans upright. We have used white wine and water, apple juice (cider) orange and lemon juice. the chicken always has great flavor and is so juicy.

Made this tonight, used a dry rub and a can of Sprite instead of Beer. Turned out wonderful, my Grandson loved it especially the skin, even my Granddaughter, who is the most picky child there is. She had a leg and thigh and ate every bit along with 2 whole ears of corn. So this is one we will do again and again. 5 stars

This was great way to spend a summer Sunday afternoon outside, playing beanbags w/ chicken on the grill. This recipe is great as is - didn't change a thing. Here in West-Central Ohio, we call it Beer-Butt Chicken.

Because I am not a beer drinker I use different flavor sodas iinstead; so far Dr Pepper is my family favorite.

2 suggestions: 1) use 16-oz beer cans ... that gives you more to drink first, plus the chicken is lifted higher off the grill ... i tie the feet together, but with a 12-oz can, they charcoal 2) 16-oz cans were better than 12-oz ... so i thought 24-oz can would be better ... yes, taller but they are wider than normal cans and won't fit in beer-can chicken holders* (*you can buy them at Walmart for about $5 each)

We make these chickens all the time and they are as juicy as the Colonel's! We cook them in the oven on 400 - 425 for 1-1 1/2 hours setting the beer can on a sheet pan. Yummm!
