I followed recipe to the letter, am an "old cook" & was totally disappointed - would NOT recommend and will never try again - picture is deceiving also - on a scale of 1-10, it is a 1 in my opinion.

I recommend making the cake like the box says but using half as much skim milk instead of water, half a cup of butter instead of oil & 2 eggs instead of 3 (using less egg makes it have a brownie like texture. This recipie turned out great!

RE maybeegirl: I'm so sorry you were disappointed in this cake. Although we call this a cake the cake layer is really more like a dense brownie layer. There are 2 things that could be the cause of the hard ense texture: (1) Overbaking the cake portion. (2) Before serving let the cake stand at room temperature for 15 minutes, then cut and serve. This will allow the cake to temper so that it is easier to cut and eat. Hope this helps! Sincerely, Cate

I consider myself a seasoned baker & cook and this recipe ruined our Birthday gathering. I knew that the batter was way too thick when I spread it in the pan to bake it, but I continued because I trust Betty Crocker & the ratings it got. That bottom cake layer was way to hard & dense to cut into for slicing & biting into!! I followed every step of the recipe and thought it would turn out scrumptious but what a disappointment for the Betty Crocker Fan that I am. How could this get a 4.5 rating. This was awful!

Deliscious!!! Made the cake like the box said instead of how the recipe said. Turned out great, the other way I think would have been too dense.Next time will use coffee iceream.

I made the recipe the way it says except I added 1/2 cup water to the mix bcuz when mixing the batter it was too thick and cldn't do much with it. The center of the cake sank after cooling but I just filled it with more ice cream;0) and I used coffee almond fudge ice cream... yum!!!

If you don't like coffee liqueur, you could try creme de menthe, Bailey's Irish Creme, or make it more chocolaty with Godiva liqueur. Good luck!

This cake is delicious! Like the other comments say, the base is not like a cake, but it is so good. I used coffee ice cream. Everyone loved it! I loved how easy it was to make, probably the easiest dessert I've ever made. Thanks Betty Crocker!!
