Known also as "lava cakes," molten cakes are the answer to the most decadent chocolate craving. Here's an easy version using cake mix.

Seriously, what happened to the previous recipe for the very same cupcakes? It didn't have pudding before and I loved the original recipe MUCH better.

These turned out great! I altered just a bit by using bittersweet chocolate instead of semi sweet but other than that I followed the recipe to a T. I used cupcake wrappers and sprayed them with non stick spray. My cake set very well and could be handled like a cupcake without making a mess. My kids absolutely loved them.

I've made these cupcakes before - amazing! I wanted to help a friend out and make these for a party, but do they freeze well? (I wouldn't frost them)

My almost 7yr old asked me today if we could "go to that place that has the chocolate lava cakes." Of course it was too late to actually do that but I decided to check the pantry to see what I could do to satisfy her chocolate craving. After seeing the picture of these on the back of the box I dedcided to try out the recipe online since I had the necessary ingredients to make these. YAY! I didn't realize was that these take a bit more time to complete given that you must first chill the mixture for the "lava" centers after melting it over the stove. So be sure to factor that into your preparation time. These were quite simple to prepare though I have a few suggestions... 1-Use paper cupcake liners. I used them and didn't have any problems with the cakes releasing from the liner. I'm all for easier clean-up so I'll definitely continue to use paper liners! 2-I used regular cupcake pans (not the larger ones that the recipe calls for) and the recipe for the lava centers barely made enough for 18 cupcakes. There was still plenty of batter left over - probably enough to do at least another dozen or so cupcakes so in the future I'll double the lava (use 1 cup of whipping cream and 2 cups of chocolate chips). 3-While these were indeed yummy, we thought the lava centers were a little too bitter. Next time I will try half semi-sweet and half milk chocolate chips to see if that yields a more tolerable tasting lava. You might want to consider using all milk chocolate if making these strictly for kids.

My 4* rating is based on taste......... I had high hopes for these cupcakes, and for taste it delivered, but presentation wasn't very pretty! I did make one substitution and that was replacing the whipping cream for half & half + 1 tblsp butter...I've made this substitution in other recipes but I don't think this one can tolerate it. I think the "lava" was too thin because of it (toothpaste consistency). I ended up piping it into the center of the cupcakes which worked well- no run over like some other reviews wrote. To salvage these for Easter dinner I put them into a 9x13 pan and frosted them as a cake and dessert was served! Very moist and everyone agreed they will be on the dessert menu again! I have 2 standard Wilton cupcake pans and it made 21 cupcakes- a few were a little bigger than I would have liked- so the next time I make this recipe ........ following it to the letter without any substitutions :) I will bake them into 24 cupcakes- Perfect!

Mine didn't turn out. Mabe it was because there wasn't enough filling on them? But with the measurements they gave my cupcakes overflowed and became huge making them EXTREMELY hard to get out of the pan. Also they were kind of dry. This might be from substituting the whipping cream out. But oh well. Try try and try again :)

The muffins are delicious & decadent. They tasted better after being refridgerated. I did not add the powdered sugar or strawberries. I substituted blueberries instead. Is the lava supposed to gravitate toward the bottom of the cupcake? That's what happened to mine. I was expecting it to be like the lava cake at Roy's Restaurant where when served immediately after baking, I would see a flow of "lava." However, it was too thick to flow out when served 10 minutes after coming out of the oven. They were, nevertheless, delicioso!
