Turned out very good and of course the cake was easy using the mix....but I agree w all that had trouble w the frosting. It took FOREVER to camelize, like a half hour of constant stirring, so that was not fun. Then when I added the milk and powdered sugar, it got grainy and there were pieces of hard sugar in it. I kept whipping and whipping it w my stand mixer and would have thrown it out except that company was coming and I was out of sugar to make more....so put it on. It's super thick and couldn't spread it on the whole cake as it was pulling up the top of the cake. I disguised this by shaving chocolate all over it. Everyone loved it but I would never make the frosting again. What a pain!

Liz...I always add a pinch or two of cinnamon to my chocolate cake patter. When used sparingly, it inhances the flavor of chocolate without actually tasting it. Since this recipe calls for 1 teaspoon, maybe your cinnamon is old because with that amout the flavor should be obvious. On a side note...thanks for the reviews on the frosting in this recipe. Very helpful for I wont bother with it. Tip, I believe you can purchase caramel flavored icing.

This cake isn't bad, but it is just a devil's food cake wrapped in a Mexican label. I could not taste the cinnamon at all. The frosting was awful and I had to toss it away. I ended up having to use store bought frosting. Never baking this again.

I just made this cake and thank god i tried the frosting before putting it on the cake. It was horrible and it didn't look a think like the picture. I ended up tossing it out and using canned frosting (I dosed the vanilla with some cinnamon and it tastes really good). I haven't tried the cake yet, but it smells good.

The cake was very good, but I can't say the same for the frosting. It was terrible.I would make the cake again with another frosting.

good cake but the homemade frosting was way too sweet for my taste... next time I would use the store-bought frosting from the jar instead.

I must have done something wrong with the frosting stage of this recipe. It took more than 20 minutes to get the sugar to caramelize when at the end of it all, it was too runny to stay on the cake & was completely grainy, telling me the sugar never really melted.

I tried this recipe for a mothers day treat. The cake was very good....but the frosting was horrible to make i burned myself and it took for ever it was a lot darker then the picture and runny i had to add a lot of milk because it was just a hard sugar ball when i tried to mix it.... But it was good. I will make the cake over not too sure about the frosting

WOW!! Just go for it and you'll LOVE IT, I promise. The homemade frosting is super easy and (no offense) so much better than any store bought frostings. In fact, even IF I use a boxed cake mix, I make my own frostings. So easy, I have recipe for one using chocolate chips! "Fanny Farmer Cookbook", you can't go wrong, honest! Plus, their reg. cookbook has so many tips right inside the covers- front and back - that are invaluable, those alone are worth the $ of the cookbook, which isn't expensive to start with. A good, basic book! When I saw they had a "Baking Book" I snapped it right up. HINT, when using cake mixes, sub 1 stick butter for oil, and it'll taste homemade!!! Works every time! Always use Large eggs, if it only calls for 2, use 3 eggs, keeps it moist much, much longer. Nothing worse than a dry cake, right??? Have Fun and Enjoy, RSB in Tucson, AZ
