If you don’t have buttermilk on hand, you can use regular milk plus vinegar. Pour 4 teaspoons white vinegar into a 2-cup measuring cup; add enough milk to equal 1 3/4 cups.
You can fry your own bacon instead of purchasing already cooked bacon pieces. Cook 6 to 8 strips of bacon until crisp, drain and crumble to equal about 1/2 cup of pieces.
