I agree--OMIT the pudding. Have made these for yrs. and I use my own fresh made buttercream frosting. (I'm 70, so have tried many ways, but this is the best)

My variation of this recipe is using a Betty Crocker Cake Mix, any chocolate flavor, reducing water to 2-3 Tbsp. water to consistancy of cookie dough, 1/4 c. oil, and 2 eggs. Mix well by hand until incorporated. Roll dough into 2" ball, or drop by tbsp. onto lightly sprayed baking sheet (or parchment lined). Bake 350 for 10 min. Cool completely. Spread half of cookies with Betty Crocker Cream Cheese Frosting, top with other half of cookies. Simple & Yummy!

I made these last night and thought that the cookie part was a little too sweet. I think it will be much better without the pudding. I will try the first reviews recommendation of omitting the pudding and reducing the liquid. Did you reduce only the water to make 1 cup of total liquid?

I made these twice - once with the pudding and once without - decreasing the liquid to a total of 1 cup. I also added 2 tsp. red food coloring. - man oh man the ones without the pudding were way better. now a family favorite. I am thinking of using orange cake mix making them orange cream whoopie pies.
