I've made something very similar using a Crock Pot recipe...without the bell peppers and I put in cooked ground turkey and onions. It's yummy and easy because I just cook it on low all day in the Crock Pot. Might add the bell peppers sometime, because I do love bell peppers! And it IS chili, just ONE kind of many...gotta love variety!

A nice differnt chili.Great for vegetarians. I never eat meat. For chili a excellent substitute is Soyrizo. It is a bit hard to find in small towns but.delish and worth the search. It is spicy and you wouldn't notice the missing meat.My friends all wanted the recipe and they didn't even know there was no meat in it.You can also get this wonderful substitute on line.Soyrizo.com

I plan on making this for the Super Bowl this weekend and can't wait to see how it comes out! For those who are calorically concerned with this recipe; please note that the calories from fat is less than 25% of the total calories which is inline with the D.A.S.H. diet recommended by healthcare professionals for a healthy heart - and the fats are all healthy besides the sour cream if you subsitute extra virgin olive oil for vegetable oil. I will cook this with brown basmati rice (holds up well in soupy Indian dishes) and cut the rice portion in half and also substitute light sour cream. This will reduce the recipe to a Weight Watchers friendly Points Plus value of 12, less than a Big Mac sandwich (14 Points) and certainly less than a Big Mac meal with fries and a diet soda (24 Points). Even with a full serving of rice, this chili recipe would have 15 Points Plus values. I sure would rather have this gigantic bowl of heart healthy, high fiber, high protein chili instead of a Big Mac meal comprised of 48 g of fat and almost 50% of calories from fat. And think about how often American families eat Big Mac meals!

Thank you Livia, this was mighty tasty! My husband and I loved this recipe. I followed all the directions except for the rice, I used brown rice and then added the browned garlic in olive to rice when it was done. We love garlic. I am trying not to use so much animal protein in my diet, so this recipe fits the bill.

Some of the ones complaining about the calories and sodium: 1) This is actually a COMPLETE meal, NOT "just a bowl of chili": A)a serving of rice (starch), B)a serving of vegetarian chili (protein and vegetables), and C)a dollop of garnish - the salsa cream. (dairy). And since tomatoes are really fruits -- there you go! 2) I would mix the equivalent dry beans (to make the amounts specified), and soak overnight. I would use no added salt tomatoes and tomato paste. You will remove at least half the sodium.

Way too much tomato taste. We added more chili powder (ancho), grilled cubed sirloin, masa flour as a thickener, and amped up the spices (cumen, garlic, etc.). After all these tweaks, it was delicious.

Why is everyone so concerned there are beans in it? Most people prefer beans in their chili. Who wants to eat spicy liquid with nothing to actually chew? I make 3 beans chili all the time and everyone I know loves it! Plus if you people are so concerned about the calorie content of this chili then go a piece of celery and don't eat real food and let the rest of us enjoy a good meal now and then. Life is too short to be so fanatical.

Delicioso! Have been a vegetarian for years, but wasn't always. I love chili, and I have made a number of vegetarian chili recipes, and they always turn out great. If I feel that I miss the meat texture, I'll throw in a package of the soy crumbles, but usually I'm happy with the assortment of beans. If you think it has too much sodium, fine; cut back on the sodium or drink a large glass of pure water after dinner. It's a great recipe!

I'm a little concerned that the reader can't actually READ. Afterall. This contest was a contest between the STAFF. So of course the winner would be a staff memeber...I mean, hello? Typically when I want to make something for my family I read the ingredients first. If it seems to bland or too unhealthy, I dont cook it. So why everyoine is writing reviews about how unhealthy it is? Beyond me. Like Julia Child says, Everything tastes better with butter. LIVE A LITTLE PEOPLE! Those that cry about their not being meat in the recipe?? Wouldnt that add more calories? Hello? Pick a side and stick to it. Either you want calories or you dont. Now for my review. I enjoyed making this with my son. It was not something I would typically make but I LOVED it. I enjoy tht something can taste so wonderful without the meat. I enjoy showing my son that as well. I omitted some of salt to add later if I wanted. I did not add any salt during the recipe. I added mine at the end to taste. I loved it. :) good job!
