I have been making my version of this fruitcake for over 35 years. It is a family favorite and although my children will not eat other fruitcakes this one is a must have for Christmas. I use twice as much fruit and add prunes, currents and raisins but leave out the citrus. This makes a dense almost all fruit and nut fruit cake. This is a great recipe!

This is the first time I have made this recipe . I made it for my mother and she loved it .I used splenda instead of sugar . I looked at many recipes and this one seemed simple with not all the heavy molasses and brown sugar.

The first time I made this was about 25 years ago. Since then I have made it many times as it is a perfect Christmas Gift. So unlike the standard ''store-bought'' fruitcakes but much like the gourmet gift shop cakes that you have to pay a fortune for. I try to get the brightest coloured fruit and wrap the cake in cellophane tied with a gold ribbon. The best recipes are so often the oldest recipes.
