Easy to make and tasted great! I doubled the raisins - the kids were asking for more.

very good! got ALOT of hearty compliments at work! i added an extra 1/4 cup or so of buttermilk, and and extra 1/2 Tbs of sugar, and lightly buttered the top after it came out of the oven. Did not look like the picture (smooth, visible X), so Im going to work on my kneading...maybe thats it? making a loaf for my husband tonight, and for my dad tomorrow night....so i should be a professional by then with whipped butter...soo good not dry or crumbley :D

The true Irish recipe that my grandmother brought from Ireland calls for 1 tbs. of Caraway seeds.

Stand alone, it's ok, if you like unsweet breads. Compared to a local grocery store bakery's Irish soda bread, it's just dreadful. I can't stop eating the grocery store's bread - it's that good. And the fact that many people have noted that they tweaked the recipe adding just a little of something to make it better - that's changing the recipe! I've seen a lot other recipes with egg and more sugar, hopefully that will help me find that heavenly bread.

I am so glad I found this recipe! It came out delicious; although I did have to add about a cup of buttermilk to get the dough to a point where it could be worked with. I saw that someone suggested adding butter and sugar to the top....I will definitely try that next time!

I add 1 egg to my recipe. Also, to get more moist raisins, I soak them in warm water while I prepare the other ingredients. Drain well and add to batter. I also noticed that when I let the dough sit for about 20 mins before baking, it rose more and was not as dense. This is definately a 1 loaf recipe or you can make it in cupcake tins for individual servings for a change. Everyone loves it!

Never having made a bread except for with a mix and a bread maker, I have to say this was VERY easy to make. Not much kneading, no rising and no checking the temperature of the liquids going in. I also have never had Irish Soda Bread before so I did not know what to expect. The family raved about it. I will definitely be making it again. The only reason that I didn't give it a 5 is because it didn't make much and it was rather dense (I assume that is because it doesn't rise).
