Ingredients

1: box Betty Crocker® SuperMoist® devil's food cake mix

1: cup water

1/2: cup vegetable oil

3: eggs

1 1/2: containers Betty Crocker® Rich & Creamy chocolate frosting

: Tray or cardboard (20x14 inches), covered with wrapping paper and plastic food wrap or foil

1: large yellow gumdrop

1: small black gumdrop

: Black shoestring licorice

Directions

1 Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pans). Grease or spray bottoms and sides of two 8- or 9-inch round cake pans.
2 In large bowl, beat cake mix, water, oil and eggs with electric mixer on low speed 30 seconds, then on medium speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Pour into pans. Bake as directed on box for 8- or 9-inch rounds. Cool 10 minutes. Remove from pans to cooling racks. Cool completely, about 30 minutes. Refrigerate or freeze cake 30 to 60 minutes or until firm.
3 Using serrated knife, cut rounded top off cake to level surface; place cut side down. Cut cake as shown in diagram; arrange pieces on serving tray. Attach pieces together with a small amount of frosting. Spread a thin layer of frosting over top and sides to seal in crumbs. Refrigerate or freeze cake 30 to 60 minutes. Frost entire cake with remaining frosting. Use yellow gumdrop slices for eyes, black gumdrop for nose and shoestring licorice for whiskers, lines on eyes and front paws. Store loosely covered.

Can't find black shoestring licorice? Use black decorating gel instead; it can often be found near the cake and frosting items in your grocery store.

Create an attractive display by covering a piece of sturdy cardboard with wrapping paper, then plastic food wrap. Stretch and secure with tape. Or cover cardboard with foil or cooking parchment paper.

I made one of these and it was a hit with my Granddaugther. You can change it for any occasion. Just change the coloring of the icing. Very easy and quick to make. Thank you for the great idea!

I made this as a trial for next Halloween for gift giving. It was so easy and the instructions were very easy. My granddaughter loves cats so it was a big hit. I used gel instead of the licorice as no one likes it. Thank you for the great ideas.

This cake was so fun! Take the time to follow the directions. I used pnut m&M's for eyes and nose. Used some melted chocolate to make eye slits. Melted chocolate in a Ziploc bag, snipped the end and piped whiskers and paws. Let cool, then put on cake. Worked awesome because noone here likes blk licorice. Thanks BC!
