I used to make this bread all the time. Best bread ever! I also had it in the old orange Betty Crocker cookbook, that recipe used to have variations for the bread. I wish this recipe shared those as well.

Magiallyn, Try not rolling dough so tight after you have made it 18"x9". You can also add abit more sugar or salt.Try using milk instead of water, roll the dough loosely and pinch the ends. You should like that better. hope this helped. Chris

My wife asked me to go to the store for bread one day, well after spending some dough which I thought was to much for a loaf of bread i decided to try baking it. Never baking before i followed the recipe and some advice from the reviews and OH MY Gosh. The best bread I have ever eaten. They are right follow the dough not the time limits and you will not be disapointed and add some additional water if needed. I used a kitchen aid mixer with a dough hook for kneeding. Thank you Betty Crocker!

I used to make this recipe from my mom's old orange cookbook and loved it. Recently I tried another recipe, from another book and it turned out badly -dense, tasteless, etc- and I had to find this recipe back! I agree with others, you can substitute milk for 1 3/4 of the water and it'll turn out fine. Love this bread with chili or for sandwiches...and after a few days as french toast. Yum!

I just made this bread today, it was wonderful!!! The only thing I did different was substituted vanilla soy milk (Silk) 1.5 cups of warm milk and the rest water very good flavor bread. It was wonderful. I preheated my oven to warm then put my bread in their to double, worked great.

I cut recipe in half and used bread machine to kneed it all together, then put in loaf pan and baked in oven, saves my hands from hurting

I've made this recipe 3 times. The first time was a disaster! But, the second time I realized that where I went wrong the first time was I payed more attention to the clock and less attention to the dough. That is my recommendation to anyone making this bread - follow the "or until..." instructions rather than the timing instructions. Tastes great and makes great sandwich bread, homemade croutons, french toast, etc.
