Ingredients

2: squares unsweetened baking chocolate

1: cup all-purpose flour

1/2: teaspoon salt

1/2: teaspoon baking soda

1/2: cup butter

1: cup granulated sugar

1: egg

1: teaspoon almond extract

1/2: cup milk

3/4: cup chooped nuts (if desired)

Directions

1 Set oven to 350*
2 Grease and flour 8 inch cake pan
3 Drop the chocolate in the top of a double boiler and melt it over hot, but not boiling, water.(stove at lowest setting) Stir occasionally with a long spoon.
4 When chocolate is melted, turn off heat and carefully lift of the top of the double boiler. Set chocolate aside to let cool
5 .Sift the flour, salt,and baking soda into a large bowl. Set aside.
6 In another large bowl, beat the sugar and shortening with a mixing spoon until smooth and creamy
7 Break the egg into a cup, then add it to the shortening mixture. Beat until fluffy
8 Add the cooled chocolate and almond extract to the shortening mixture. Mix well.
9 Add a tbs.of the flour mixture and then a little milk, stir. Keep adding flour and then milk until all of the milk and flour mixture have been added
10 Add the nuts and stir.
11 Pour into prepared pan
12 Bake for 35 to 40 min., then test for doneness with toothpick.
13 Let the cake cool in pan on wire-rack for 10-15 min. Then turn cake on rack.
14 Frost with chocolate frosting and sprinkle with nuts (if desired)
