EXPERT TIPS

Expert Tips

Contrary to the teachings of some diet gurus, bread is not fattening. Weight gain is caused by eating more calories than your body needs. Overindulging in bread or spreading slices thick with high-fat, high-calorie toppings can cause you to put on pounds. Including bread in a well-balanced diet is part of most successful weight-loss programs.

Pop quiz: To burn 100 calories, would you rather jump rope or read the paper? If you want to burn more calories in less time, you'll opt for jumping rope. You'd have to read the paper for 80 minutes to burn 100 calories. Ten minutes of jumping rope accomplishes the same thing.
