I made this cake for my son's second birthday, and he loved it! I could not find 8x4 loaf pans, and had to use 9x5.5. So, I had to use an extra box of cake to be sure that I had enough. Filling the pans 2/3 full, I had a little cake batter left over. I also got an extra container of icing just to be safe. I'm a novice cake decorator, so I wanted extra icing because I'm no good at frosting cakes. I'm glad that I had it! I used more red than the recipe called for, and I needed more grey than the recipe called for. Since I only had enough grey to ice the area between the cab and the truck, I used white everywhere else grey was called for. If you ice the area between the cab and the truck first, it is hard to spread the red frosting without smearing the grey everywhere. Ice the truck and then the area between the cab and truck. Instead of using white icing for the windows, I bought Wilton's sugar sheets, light blue, and just cut them out and stuck them on. Easy! I framed them with white icing. Could not find licorice wheels, so I used more oreo cookies. I couldn't find any candies like the ones pictured, so I used Starburst round gummies with liquid inside. It looked nice. I used a lot of red food coloring to get a good, true red: one tall container of Wilton red gel, and two small containers of Wilton Christmas red. I should have purchased the no taste red and used it along with the Christmas red. I used orange icing to write my son's name on the top of the cab, his age on top of the truck in front of the ladder, and his age on the back of the truck. It took me longer than 3 hours and 5 minutes, but it was worth it!

For how fun this cake turned out, it was actually quite simple to construct. We wanted a bigger cake so we combined 2 boxes of cake mix across 3 9.5" x 5" loaf pans and baked a little longer. Instead of using white frosting, we used blue fruit roll-ups for windows, and pretzels for a ladder. The cake was great: http://domesticwormhole.wordpress.com/2011/05/17/what-4-year-olds-eat/

This was so easy to do went over well for my 3 yr grandson. I couldn't find the licorce - I use fruit roll up that were a mix of red and orange. Folded in half and then again then formed a roll- with the gray icing i made a nozzle. Along with the truck I made cupcakes to serve, I found a bag of firemen at the toy store - put one on each of the cupcakes. I set the cake on firm styrofoam covered in foil so in was up from the tray. I found a dalmation dog, fire hydrant, and some plastic trees to set up around the truck. Grandson other favorite is Winnie the pooh - a figurine of Phooh was riding on the truck. It was great with the cupcakes set around the truck- it looked like the whole fire station was at his birthday.

This cake was very easy to make. Decorating it was also very easy. I emprovised with the trim for the windows using black icing instead of the licorice. Also I used oreos for the wheel but instead of just the cookies I took one side off and used the side with icing only craving out a circle in the middle with a toothpick to make it look like white walled tires. Ultimately the boy that I made it for did a head dive into it and loved it! Definately 5 spoons!
