Made these bars yesterday. I too am a baker from scratch but, these looked so good. Changed some things up a bit. Like a previous reviewer I baked the crust 12 minutes before I added the cherries. I also added some cherries I picked in the summer to the canned cherries. I sprinkled almonds over the cherries and then on the topping before baking. Baked an extra 10 minutes. The bars smelled fantastic and tasted even better. They are better the next day. Will make again using other pie fillings. Great recipe. Don't hesitate to try. You won't be sorry.
