Icing

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon rum extract
  • Betty Crocker™ red and green decorating sugars, if desired

Steps

  • 1
Heat oven to 375°F. In large bowl, stir cookie mix, butter, egg, flour, 1 teaspoon extract and the nutmeg until soft dough forms.
  • 2
Fit cookie press with desired template. Fill cookie press with cookie dough; press cookies onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  • 3
Bake 6 to 8 minutes or until set. Cool 1 minute; remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. Cool completely, about 20 minutes.
  • 4
In small bowl, stir powdered sugar, milk and 1/4 teaspoon extract until desired consistency. Drizzle over cookies. Sprinkle cookies with colored sugar.

  • Ready-made eggnog is typically available during the holiday months. For more eggnog flavor, replace 1 1/2 teaspoons milk in the Icing with 2 to 3 teaspoons eggnog, adding and stirring until desired drizzling consistency is reached.
  • If you want to get a jump on your holiday baking, spritz cookies freeze well. Place completely cooled cookies between layers of waxed paper in freezer food storage containers for up to 3 months. Take out as many as you need at at time—they will thaw in about 10 minutes.
  • Measuring flour correctly is really important for these cookies. To accurately measure flour see how to measure ingredients. If you’ve undermeasured the flour, the dough will be sticky, and it will be difficult to press the dough through the cookie press. If you’ve overmeasured the flour, the dough will be dry and crumbly, resulting in dry, crumbly cookies.
  • If you have eggnog on hand and want to enhance the eggnog flavor of the cookies, you can swap it for the milk and rum in the icing. You may need to add a little extra to get the icing to the right consistency. Add it 1/2 teaspoon at a time, until the desired consistency.
  • If you’re not using ground nutmeg frequently, you may want to consider purchasing whole nutmeg, instead. It keeps fresh much longer than the ground variety. When you need ground nutmeg, simply grate just the amount of fresh nutmeg (using a microplane or rasp),you need.
