Easy Savory Baked Beans

Easy - to - make beans - a side dish packed with bacon and appetizing flavors!

Ingredients

pound bacon, cut into 1/2-inch pieces

cup packed brown sugar

cup cornstarch

teaspoon ground mustard

cup molasses

tablespoon white vinegar

cans (16 ounces each) baked beans

medium green bell pepper, chopped (1 cup)

medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup)

  • 1 Cook bacon in 10-inch skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until crisp. Drain, reserving 2 tablespoons drippings.
  • 2 Mix cooked bacon, 2 tablespoons drippings and remaining ingredients in 3 1/2- to 4-quart slow cooker.
  • 3 Cover and cook on high heat setting 1 hour.
  • 4 Turn to low heat setting; cook 5 to 7 hours to blend and develop flavors.

Expert Tips

The baked bean pot is the forerunner of the slow cooker. The very first slow cookers were simple bean cookers and were even referred to as "beaneries."

Spoon the beans over squares of hot corn bread or split corn bread muffins. Sprinkle with shredded Cheddar cheese and sliced green onion.
